The prognosis for atrial fibrillation is a subject of rising interest due to the increase of elderly persons in the population, increased mortality among patients with atrial fibrillation and the risk of thromboembolic complications. Therefore, the goal of this study was to highlight the most frequent thromboembolic risk factors in patients with paroxysmal and permanent atrial fibrillation. As a result, hypertension and heart failure were the predominant risk factors in both types of atrial fibrillation. Similar to what previous studies have shown, we established that there was an equal risk for stroke in patients diagnosed with paroxysmal and permanent atrial fibrillation. According to CHA2DS2-VASc score, it was found that two thirds of all patients had a score of at least 2, regardless of the type of atrial fibrillation
